When most coaches think about video analysis, they picture someone breaking down a hitter’s swing or a pitcher’s mechanics. But Coach Daryl Scholz of Fastpitching is doing something different. He’s using Onform to improve one of the game’s most underrated skills: baserunning.
Teaching baserunning isn’t just about speed — it’s about timing. In fastpitch softball, there’s an important rule that often goes unnoticed until it costs a team an out: runners cannot leave the base until the ball is released from the pitcher’s hand. It’s a rule that’s easy to forget but can lead to a big mistake if broken.
Coach Scholz saw a chance to teach this in a better way. Instead of just telling his players when they should be leaving the bag, he decided to show them.
How Coach Daryl Scholz Teaches Baserunning
He lines his players up at first base and uses Onform to film them stealing second base. The app lets him record their runs in real-time and from angles that clearly show the pitcher’s motion and the runner’s first move.
Before watching any footage, he asks each runner:
“Do you think you left early, on time, or late?“
Each player has to make a decision, which helps them build self-awareness and accountability. Once the everyone has had a turn, they regroup to watch the videos together.

Learning Baserunning Through Video
Onform’s slow motion and frame-by-frame playback let them see exactly when they started baserunning. They can tell if it was legal, and if their timing gave them the best shot at making it to second.
They also see how much farther they get when they leave the base right on time, and how just 0.2 seconds can make a huge difference in a steal. Coach Scholz points out that 0.2 seconds might seem small, but in baserunning, it can mean the difference between safe and out.
On the screen, the girls can see the extra 3-5 feet of progress that perfect timing creates. Seeing that on screen makes the lesson way more powerful than just hearing it.
Smarter Coaching with Video
This creative use of Onform helps players run better, make quicker decisions, and feel more confident. It’s a great example of how video is a powerful tool for more effective coaching, not just reviewing.
At Onform, we love seeing coaches like Daryl Scholz find new ways to level up their team. His creativity shows that coaching with video can go far beyond the basics, and lead to game-changing results.
