How Video Analysis Exposes the Root Causes of Movement Dysfunctions

Before I was working with NFL and NBA athletes to resolve chronic pain, I spent seven winter seasons as a ski boot fitter in the French Alps. 

It was during those long days of tweaking boots that I had my biggest realization: making a millimeter-level adjustment to someone’s foot completely altered how their entire body stacked up and moved.

That fascination led me to build what I call the Flow Motion Model within my Anatomy in Motion brand. It’s a complete 3D map that tracks the journey of every single bone and joint through a single footstep, a window of time that lasts only 0.6 to 0.8 seconds. 

When you understand that map, you see that a lot of what we call “injury” is actually just a body screaming under the weight of long-term compensation.

Here is how looking at the body through this biomechanical map can change the way we coach, analyze, and heal human movement.

Bringing Your Body Back to Center

Every time your heel hits the ground and your weight transitions to your toes, your body executes a masterfully timed symphony. In that fraction of a second, every joint is designed to move in all three dimensions. If one bone fails to show up for its job, the brain has to find a workaround.

Take the classic debate over pronation and supination. For decades, the fitness and medical worlds have treated pronation (the flattening of the arch) like a disease that needs to be cured with orthotics or anti-pronation shoes. 

But the truth is, your foot must be able to do both.

When your foot pronates, it naturally lengthens the tissues that handle supination, allowing them to contract through their full, powerful range. The problem arises when an athlete has flat feet or high arches and gets stuck on one end of the spectrum. Their range compresses.

Center is the resting position between extreme ranges. When a joint rests in center, it retains its full potential to move efficiently in any direction. When it doesn’t, other joints have to overwork to make up the difference.

Stopping the Chain Reaction: The Real Root of Chronic Pain

The most dangerous thing about movement compensation is that the part of the body that hurts is rarely the actual problem. Certain joints are typically overworking to cover for another part of the body that is immobile or lacking mobility.  

Consider a classic sprained ankle. It’s a violent disruption to a tight-knit cluster of bones. Usually, we ice it, rock a wobble board for a week, wait for the pain to fade, and jump right back onto the field or golf course. 

But did we actually re-educate the bones on how to move again? Rarely.

Because that ankle has lost its natural mechanics, the brain makes a silent executive decision to protect it. The knee above it alters its track, the hip shifts its rotation, and suddenly the lower back is absorbing forces it was never designed to handle. 

Decades later, an athlete ends up with an L4/L5 disc issue, treating their back with cortisone shots and core exercises, while the silent culprit remains their forgotten ankle injury.

Movement is a two-way street. A top-down shoulder restriction can lock up rib cage rotation, filter down into the pelvis, and change how your foot strikes the floor. To solve chronic issues, coaches and practitioners need a complete map to trace these compensations back to their origin.

Seeing the Invisible: Turning Video Analysis into a Healing Modality

Coaches and personal trainers have a massive, underappreciated advantage over traditional table-based therapists: they are experts at observing dynamic movement. 

While a therapist might know every detail of anatomy on a treatment table, they aren’t as used to looking at movement as a coach and a trainer is, particularly for a chosen sport.

This is where video analysis tools like Onform become indispensable to my workflow. Human eyes simply aren’t built to capture the 3D details of a 0.6-second gait cycle in real time.

By filming athletes from multiple angles and slowing the video down frame by frame, we can expose asymmetries that are invisible to the naked eye:

  • Subtle shifts in pelvic height during a stride.
  • Uneven weight distribution at the precise moment of a golf swing.
  • A foot that refuses to pronate as the tibia rotates over it.

Whether I’m running remote mentorships or working directly with teams in the US, being able to pull up a video, slow it down, and point to the exact moment a bone is misaligned gives us a shared baseline.
